Short description
Orphaned after a Nazi air raid, Paulette, a young Parisian girl, runs into Michel, an older peasant boy, and the two quickly become close. Together, they try to make sense of the chaotic and crumbling world around them, attempting to cope with death as they create a burial ground for Paulette's deceased pet dog. Eventually, however, Paulette's stay with Michel's family is threatened by the harsh realities of wartime.
What's left behind the scenes
- A film adaptation of François Boyer's novel “Secret Games” (Les jeux inconnus, 1947).
- Initially, French producer Robert Dorfman planned to release a film consisting of three novellas filmed by different directors, but due to financial difficulties, only the novella “Forbidden Games” (in March-April 1951) was filmed, from which it was later decided to make a full-length film.
- To stretch the novella to a feature length, the film crew had to reshoot some material (September 1952). In a year, the children playing the main roles had time to grow up, and some landscapes had changed, but thanks to the skill of René Clément and his team, the audience didn't notice anything.
- The musical themes in the film are arranged and performed by Spanish guitarist Narciso Yepes.
