The Caine Mutiny

During the Second World War, a US Navy minesweeper gets a new commanding officer whose strict discipline and erratic behaviour unsettle the crew. The officers come to believe their captain is unfit for command. When a violent storm puts the ship at risk, the executive officer relieves him and takes over. The captain regards this as mutiny, and the resulting court martial puts the executive officer on trial for his actions.

Edward Dmytryk directed this adaptation of Herman Wouk's novel, working from a screenplay by Stanley Roberts, with Stanley Kramer producing. It was the eighth of the eighteen films Dmytryk directed in chronological order, following The Juggler and preceding Broken Lance. Humphrey Bogart plays the captain, with Robert Francis as the young ensign, Van Johnson as the executive officer, Fred MacMurray as a fellow officer, and May Wynn and Katherine Warren in supporting roles. The credited cast runs to forty-two names.

Produced for around two million dollars, the film took roughly twenty-two million dollars at the box office worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.7 from about thirty-two thousand votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.2 from around three hundred and eighty votes. A critics' rating of 8.6 from forty-one reviews places it above both audience scores.
