This is the first film in which Edward Norton is credited as a screenwriter, although he had previously worked on the screenplays for 'Fight Club' (David Fincher, 1999), 'Frida' (Julie Taymor, 2002), 'The Painted Veil' (John Curran, 2006), and 'The Incredible Hulk' (Louis Leterrier, 2008) without receiving a credit.
In preparation for the role, Edward Norton consulted with members of the Tourette Association of America (Tourette's syndrome is a genetically determined disorder of the central nervous system that manifests at any age and is characterized by multiple motor or vocal tics that occur repeatedly throughout the day).
According to the scriptwriter, director, and actor Edward Norton, the actors playing the main roles agreed to work on the project without a fee.
The plot of Jonathan Lethem's novel, which served as the basis for this film, unfolds in 1999 (the year it was originally published), but Edward Norton moved it to 1957.
