Motherless Brooklyn
Short description
Motherless Brooklyn is set in 1950s New York, where Lionel Essrog works as a private detective for Frank Minna, the man who took him in and gave him a purpose. Lionel lives with Tourette syndrome, which sets him apart and also gives him a singular, obsessive way of working through a problem. When Frank is killed, Lionel sets out to find whoever is responsible, with little more to go on than scattered clues. His search takes him through the clubs and back streets of the city and into the company of people far more powerful than he is, including a woman whose public campaign has put her in the path of dangerous interests.
Edward Norton directed the film and wrote the screenplay, and he also stars as Lionel, leading a cast that includes Bruce Willis, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Alec Baldwin, Willem Dafoe and Bobby Cannavale. It is Norton's second film as director, arriving nearly two decades after his first, Keeping the Faith. The production, made with a budget of about 26 million dollars, brought together 41 credited cast members and close to 200 credited crew.
Released at the end of October 2019, the film earned roughly 18 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 from about 66,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from a much smaller body of 1,652 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 from 220 reviews places it below both audience scores, though not by a wide margin.
