Short description
Elena McMahon is a Washington Post journalist covering the 1984 presidential campaign when she steps away from the assignment to look after her elderly father, Richard. His past is largely a mystery to her, and the errand he draws her into takes her to Central America, where she encounters American agents and military personnel and begins to suspect that her father is mixed up in arms deals tied to right-wing fighters in Nicaragua. Caught between loyalty to him and her instincts as a reporter, she finds herself no longer merely observing the story but caught inside it.
The film is directed by Dee Rees, who wrote the screenplay with Marco Villalobos. It is her fourth feature, following Pariah, Bessie and Mudbound. Anne Hathaway plays Elena, with Ben Affleck as Treat Morrison, Willem Dafoe as Richard McMahon, Rosie Perez as Alma Guerrero, Edi Gathegi as Jones and Mel Rodriguez as Barry Sedlow. It is a British-American production from The Fyzz, Elevated Films and Little Red Hen, running 116 minutes.
Released in February 2020, the film drew a critics' rating of 3.1 out of 10 from 56 reviews. Audiences were somewhat less harsh but still cool: on IMDb it holds 4.4 out of 10 from around 17,000 votes, and on TMDB 4.9 out of 10 from roughly 550 votes, a narrow gap that leaves both well short of a positive reception.

- The film is based on the novel of the same name by American writer Joan Didion, published in 1996. The novel won the Orange Prize for Fiction (one of the most prestigious literary awards in the English-speaking world for a book written in English by a woman of any nationality and published in the UK the year before the award).
