Short description
Five Nights at Freddy's centres on Mike, a young man carrying the weight of his younger brother's disappearance a decade earlier. Struggling to hold on to custody of his sister Abby, he takes a night security post at Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria, a long-closed family entertainment restaurant. What begins as a routine job turns into something far stranger, as the abandoned building proves to be anything but quiet after dark. The film adapts the horror video game series created by Scott Cawthon, who co-wrote the screenplay with Seth Cuddeback and director Emma Tammi, and co-produced through his own company alongside Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions.
Josh Hutcherson plays Mike, with Piper Rubio as Abby, Elizabeth Lail as Vanessa, Matthew Lillard as Steve Raglan and Mary Stuart Masterson as Aunt Jane. The film was released in October 2023 and runs 110 minutes. It was made for a reported 20 million dollars and took about 291 million dollars worldwide, a return that far outstripped its production cost and made it a substantial commercial success for a horror title.
Tammi's fourth directed feature, it sits between Blood Moon and the 2025 sequel in her filmography. Audiences split sharply: on IMDb it holds 5.4/10 from around 136,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.3/10 from just over 5,000 votes. A critics' rating of 4.7/10 from 216 reviews places it below both audience measures.
What's left behind the scenes
- The animatronic characters were operated by puppeteers from The Jim Henson Company. In scenes where the characters don’t move, the puppeteers controlled both the heads and torsos. If the characters walked or danced, the puppeteers remotely controlled only the heads, while stunt doubles in costumes did the rest.
- Several directors and producers changed before work on the film even began. It all started in April 2015 with the participation of Warner Bros. Roy Lee, David Katzenberg, and Seth Grahame-Smith were initially slated to be producers, with Gil Kenan as director and screenwriter. Kenan later left the project. In March 2017, it was announced that the project would now be produced by Blumhouse Productions, with Chris Columbus as director and screenwriter. In October 2022, it became known that Emma Tammi would replace Columbus.
