American Gothic

Six young friends set off by small plane for a weekend away, but engine trouble forces them to land on a remote island off the northern Pacific coast. While one of them stays behind to work on the aircraft, the others go looking for help and come across a house in the woods whose occupants seem frozen in another era. An older couple and their grown children, who live apart from the modern world and follow strict religious ways, welcome the stranded visitors. The hospitality does not last, and the group finds itself fighting to stay alive.

John Hough directed the film, working from a screenplay by Michael Vines and Burt Wetanson, with John Quested and Christopher Harrop producing. It was Hough's tenth feature and followed Biggles, continuing his long run in suspense and fantasy filmmaking that includes The Legend of Hell House and The Watcher in the Woods. Rod Steiger and Yvonne De Carlo play the couple, with Michael J. Pollard, Fiona Hutchison, Stephen Shellen and Janet Wright among the cast.

The British-Canadian production was made by Manor Ground and Pinetalk. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.8 from around 5,200 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 5.9 from 128 votes, suggesting a modest but steady audience for this island horror story.
