You Should Have Left

Theo Conroy, a wealthy former banker, retreats to a rented house in the Welsh countryside with his much younger wife, the actress Susanna, and her six-year-old daughter Ella. The trip is meant to mend a marriage strained by Theo's jealousy and by dark episodes in his past, and by the suspicion that has followed him since the death of his first wife. Once the family settles in, Theo comes to believe that something sinister in the house knows their secrets better than they know each other, and his grip on reality begins to slip.

Kevin Bacon plays Theo and Amanda Seyfried plays Susanna, with Avery Tiiu Essex as Ella. David Koepp directed and wrote the screenplay, adapting it from a novel, and Jason Blum and Dean O'Toole produced for Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions. It runs 93 minutes and was released in June 2020.

You Should Have Left was the seventh feature Koepp had directed, following The Trigger Effect, Stir of Echoes, Secret Window, Ghost Town, Premium Rush and Mortdecai. Reception was modest: on IMDb it holds 5.4/10 from roughly 31,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1/10 from about a thousand votes. A film critics' rating of 4.9/10 from 110 reviews places the critical response below the audience scores.
