The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes

The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes follows the detective as a client named Gabrielle Valladon draws him into the search for her missing husband. The investigation takes Holmes and Dr. Watson out of Baker Street and north to Scotland, to the shores of Loch Ness, where the case becomes entangled with the legend of the loch's monster. Holmes's brother Mycroft is part of the story, and the inquiry grows into something stranger than a simple disappearance, touching on matters of national importance.

Billy Wilder directed and produced the film and wrote the screenplay with his regular collaborator I. A. L. Diamond. It was the eighteenth of the twenty-two features Wilder directed, arriving between The Fortune Cookie and Avanti! Robert Stephens plays Sherlock Holmes and Colin Blakely plays Dr. Watson, with Geneviève Page as Gabrielle, Christopher Lee as Mycroft, Tamara Toumanova as Madame Petrova and Clive Revill as Nikolai Rogozhin. Twenty-one performers are credited.

The production had a budget of about 10 million dollars and returned roughly 2 million dollars worldwide, a poor result against its cost. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 15,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 out of 10 from 351 votes. A critics' rating of 7.4 out of 10 from 28 reviews is slightly above the audience scores.
