The Lost Letter

This folk comedy follows the journey of two Ukrainian cossacks, Vasyl and Andriy. Tasked by their leader to deliver an important letter to the Russian empress in St. Petersburg, the pair must navigate various obstacles to complete their mission. Along the way, they face challenges and supernatural interference from the devil, who seeks to intercept the document, before they eventually return to their home in Dikanka.

The film was directed by Borys Ivchenko and released in 1972. It is the third project in a chronological sequence of his directed works, following Annychka and Olesya. The screenplay was written by Ivan Drach and based on a story by Nikolai Gogol. The cast features Ivan Mykolaichuk in the lead role as Vasyl, alongside Fedir Stryhun as Andriy. Other cast members include Lidiya Belozyorova, Zemfira Tsakhilova, Mikhail Golubovich, and Vladimir Glukhoy.

Produced by Dovzhenko Film Studios in the Soviet Union, the movie has been well received by viewers. It holds a high rating of 8.3 on IMDb based on 1,800 votes and a 7.7 on TMDB from 40 votes.
