In an interview in 2018, director Alex Ross Perry stated that the prototype for the character played by Elizabeth Moss was Axl Rose, frontman and vocalist for Guns N' Roses and AC/DC. He also stated that the plot structure is reminiscent of the biographical drama 'Steve Jobs' (2015) by Danny Boyle.
During the making of the film, actresses Ashley Benson and Cara Delevingne fell in love with each other.
According to Elizabeth Moss, the film depicts pure truth. Despite the fact that many of her lines sound like spontaneously improvised remarks, everything she says on screen was written in the script. The actress says she has never had to memorize such a complex text before.
Before filming, Elizabeth Moss spent three months learning to play the guitar.
During the scene in the recording studio, Elizabeth Moss’s character sings a few lines of a song about a garbage dump. Those present look at her in horror, believing she has completely lost her mind and is talking nonsense. In reality, however, the song “Garbage Dump,” from which the character Moss quotes, is believed to have been written by serial killer Charles Manson.
