Short description
Her Smell centres on Becky Something, the volatile frontwoman of a punk band that once filled arenas. As her drinking and erratic behaviour throw the group's tour and future into doubt, she tries to recover the spark that made them successful, while the relationships around her — with her bandmates and her former husband — come under strain. Elisabeth Moss plays Becky, with Cara Delevingne, Dan Stevens, Agyness Deyn, Gayle Rankin and Ashley Benson among the supporting cast. Alex Ross Perry wrote and directed the film, which he made between Listen Up Philip and Rite Here Rite Now, and Elisabeth Moss served as one of its producers.
The film was released in April 2019 and runs 136 minutes. Its reception splits sharply by audience: on IMDb it holds 5.9 from roughly 8,800 votes, and on TMDB 5.8 from about 146 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 7.3 from 138 reviews — reviewers responded considerably more warmly than general viewers did. Shot across Greece and the United States, it is a music drama rather than a concert film, built around a performance at its centre.

- During the making of the film, actresses Ashley Benson and Cara Delevingne fell in love with each other.
- During the scene in the recording studio, Elizabeth Moss’s character sings a few lines of a song about a garbage dump. Those present look at her in horror, believing she has completely lost her mind and is talking nonsense. In reality, however, the song “Garbage Dump,” from which the character Moss quotes, is believed to have been written by serial killer Charles Manson.
- According to Elizabeth Moss, the film depicts pure truth. Despite the fact that many of her lines sound like spontaneously improvised remarks, everything she says on screen was written in the script. The actress says she has never had to memorize such a complex text before.
- In an interview in 2018, director Alex Ross Perry stated that the prototype for the heroine, played by Elizabeth Moss, was Axl Rose, frontman and vocalist of Guns N' Roses and AC/DC. He also stated that the plot structure is reminiscent of Danny Boyle's biographical drama 'Steve Jobs' (2015).
