Mona Lisa, a young woman who has spent years in a Louisiana psychiatric institution, escapes and makes her way to New Orleans. She has the ability to influence and control the thoughts and actions of other people, a power she only begins to understand once she is outside the hospital walls.
In the city she meets Bonnie, a single mother and stripper, who takes her in after recognising what Mona Lisa can do. Bonnie sees a way to use that ability for her own ends, and Mona Lisa forms a bond with Bonnie's young son, Charlie. A man named Fuzz and a police officer named Harold also figure in the story as events move toward pursuit and consequences.
Ana Lily Amirpour wrote and directed the film, her third feature after A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night and The Bad Batch. Jun Jong-seo plays Mona Lisa, with Kate Hudson, Ed Skrein, Evan Whitten, Craig Robinson and Lauren Bowles among the cast. Released in 2022, it runs 102 minutes and is a British-American production. It holds a critics' rating of 6.6/10 from 67 reviews, while audience scores stand at 6.2/10 on IMDb and 6.4/10 on TMDB, a narrower gap than is typical for a fantasy-thriller of this kind.
