Harvey Fairchild is a successful architect approaching his sixtieth birthday, and the milestone sends him into an anxious reckoning with growing older. His wife, Gillian, a singer, is waiting on the results of a medical test, and the uncertainty weighs on her even as she holds the household together. Their grown children, their neighbors and the local priest all add to the pressures crowding the couple's life in the days around the birthday celebration. The film blends comedy with the strains running through a long marriage.
Blake Edwards directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Milton Wexler, and the film sits between Micki & Maude (1984) and Blind Date (1987), the twenty-first of the twenty-seven features he directed. Jack Lemmon and Julie Andrews lead as Harvey and Gillian, with Sally Kellerman, Robert Loggia, Jennifer Edwards and Robert Knepper among the credited cast of thirty-five. Columbia Pictures was among the production companies, and the film runs 102 minutes.
Reception has been modest. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from around 2,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.7 out of 10 from roughly 31 votes, a small sample that points to limited attention rather than strong approval. The audience scores suggest a film watched chiefly by admirers of its director or its two leads.
