The Boogeyman is a 2023 horror film about a family in mourning. High school student Sadie Harper and her younger sister Sawyer are still coming to terms with the death of their mother, while their father Will, a therapist, is absorbed in his own grief and has little attention to spare for them. When a desperate patient turns up at their home seeking help, he leaves behind a malevolent supernatural presence that fixates on the household, feeding on the fear and suffering of those it targets. The sisters try to make their father understand the danger they are in before it is too late.
Rob Savage directed the film, which follows Salt, Host and Dashcam in his filmography and was released before Other Mommy. Mark Heyman, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods wrote the screenplay, with Shawn Levy, Daniel S. Levine and Dan Cohen producing. Sophie Thatcher and Vivien Lyra Blair play the sisters, Chris Messina plays their father, and David Dastmalchian, Marin Ireland and Madison Hu appear in supporting roles.
Made for a budget of 35 million US dollars, the film took about 82 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 from roughly 53,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 from a much smaller pool of around 1,200 votes. A critics' score of 5.9 from 197 reviews places it roughly level with the IMDb audience rating and somewhat below the TMDB figure.
