The Prodigy

Sarah Blume is worried about her eight-year-old son Miles. His behaviour has changed in ways she cannot explain, and she comes to believe that something supernatural has taken hold of him. As she tries to protect her family and hold on to her love for her child, she begins to look into the past for answers about what — or who — is responsible for the change in him. The line between what she perceives and what is real becomes increasingly difficult to keep in view.

The Prodigy is a horror thriller directed by Nicholas McCarthy, his fourth feature after The Pact, At the Devil's Door and Holidays. Jeff Buhler wrote the screenplay, and Tripp Vinson and Daniel Bekerman produced it for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Orion Pictures, XYZ Films and Vinson Films. Taylor Schilling plays Sarah, with Jackson Robert Scott as Miles, and Colm Feore, Brittany Allen, Peter Mooney and Oluniké Adeliyi among the supporting cast.

Made for about 6 million dollars, the film took roughly 21 million dollars worldwide, a return of more than three times its budget. Audiences rate it moderately: it holds 5.9 out of 10 on IMDb from around 31,000 votes and 6.2 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller pool of just over a thousand. A critics' score of 5.1 out of 10 from 83 reviews sits close to the audience figures, so reviewers and viewers largely landed in the same place.
