The Super

Louie Kritski is a wealthy New York landlord who has let one of his apartment buildings fall into disrepair, ignoring the complaints of the tenants who live there. When the condition of the property lands him in court, the judge offers him a choice: jail, or move into the rundown building himself and stay there until he brings it up to livable standards. Louie, who learned the rental business from his father, Big Lou, has to live among the people he has been mistreating.

Rod Daniel directed the comedy, his fifth feature after Teen Wolf, Stranded, Like Father Like Son and K-9, working from a screenplay by Sam Simon. Joe Pesci plays Louie, with Vincent Gardenia as Big Lou, Madolyn Smith Osborne as Naomi Bensinger, Rubén Blades as Marlon, Stacey Travis as Heather and Carole Shelley as Irene Kritski. The film counted 40 credited cast members and 53 credited crew.

Released in October 1991, The Super ran 86 minutes and was a co-production between the United States and Japan, backed by 20th Century Fox, LARGO Entertainment and JVC. Its production budget of 22 million dollars was not recovered: worldwide box office came to about 11 million. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.7 from roughly 7,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.9 from 128 votes, indicating modest and limited audience approval.
