Steamboat Willie is a short animated comedy in which Mickey Mouse pilots a river steamboat, whistling as he works. His playful mood ends when the ship's captain, Pete, catches him at the wheel and sends him back to humbler duties on deck. When Minnie Mouse arrives at the dock just as the boat is pulling away, Mickey finds a resourceful way to bring her aboard. Together they turn a goat and whatever else is at hand into makeshift instruments for a musical performance, until Pete decides he has had enough.
The film was directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, who also wrote it, with Walt Disney and Roy O. Disney producing. It is one of the earliest titles in the directing filmographies of both men, following several 1927 shorts and preceding later work such as The Skeleton Dance and Plane Crazy. Walt Disney provides the voices of Mickey, Minnie and Pete, uncredited. Running eight minutes, the short was made by Walt Disney Studio in the United States.
Steamboat Willie holds a rating of 7.4 from roughly 13,000 votes on IMDb and 7.3 from about 625 votes on TMDB, indicating a widely seen film that audiences continue to rate positively. Its place in animation history rests on its synchronized sound, which helped establish the Disney studio and made Mickey Mouse a lasting figure.
