The kingdom is in danger when the villainous knight Torchesac, who serves the sinister lord of La Mortaille, gets hold of a magic flute. The instrument forces anyone who hears it to dance uncontrollably, and Torchesac uses it to raid one village after another. The young squire Pirlouit, who first found the flute, turns to his friend Johan, and with the magician Homnibus they set out for the land of the Smurfs, the only makers of such instruments, hoping to obtain another flute and put a stop to the usurpers.
The film is an animated adventure from Belgium and France, released in December 1975 and running ninety minutes. It was directed by Eddie Lateste and by Peyo, the creator of the Smurfs, from a screenplay by Yvan Delporte, and it draws on the comics about Johan and Pirlouit rather than on the Smurfs alone. The voice cast includes William Coryn as Johan, Michel Modo as Pirlouit, Jacques Dynam as La Mortaille, Henri Crémieux as Homnibus, Michel Elias as the Great Smurf and Ginette Garcin as Dame Barde. It took about 11 million dollars worldwide.
On TMDB the film holds a rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 102 votes, a modest but positive result that suggests a small, settled audience rather than a broad one.
