Hear My Song

Micky O'Neill runs a struggling nightclub in Liverpool and needs a big name to fill it. His plan is to bring over the Irish tenor Josef Locke, who left England twenty-five years earlier to avoid tax charges and has not been seen there since. The problem is finding him, and Micky's first attempt lands him with an impostor billed as Mr. X. Determined to repair both the club and his relationship with Nancy, whose mother Cathleen was once close to Locke, Micky travels to Ireland to track down the real singer, while the police chief Jim Abbott still wants Locke back in England to face the law.

Hear My Song is a British comedy directed by Peter Chelsom, who wrote the screenplay with Adrian Dunbar. It was Chelsom's first feature, released in 1991, and he went on to direct Funny Bones, The Mighty, Serendipity, Shall We Dance? and several later films. Ned Beatty plays Josef Locke and Dunbar plays Micky, with Tara Fitzgerald as Nancy, Shirley Anne Field as Cathleen, William Hootkins as Mr. X and David McCallum as Jim Abbott.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around two thousand votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.8 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 7.5 out of 10 from thirty-one reviews places it above the audience score on TMDB and close to the IMDb figure.
