Short description
Chloe is a teenager who has spent her life isolated at home with her mother, Diane, who homeschools her and oversees every part of her daily routine. Chloe uses a wheelchair and takes a range of medications, and she has little contact with anyone her own age. As she grows older, she starts to question the life Diane has built around her, and she comes to suspect that her mother is hiding something serious. The bond between mother and daughter, which Diane presents as devoted care, becomes the source of Chloe's unease as she tries to learn the truth.
Aneesh Chaganty directed and co-wrote the film with Sev Ohanian, following his debut feature Searching in 2018. Sarah Paulson plays Diane and Kiera Allen plays Chloe, with Pat Healy, Sara Sohn, Erik Athavale and B. J. Harrison in supporting roles. The film is a drama and thriller made on a budget of about 1 million US dollars, and it took roughly five times that amount at the worldwide box office.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.7 from around 112,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.2 from a much smaller pool of about 3,000 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 138 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a generally similar level of approval across viewers and reviewers.
