Beowulf & Grendel

Based on the Anglo-Saxon poem, Beowulf & Grendel follows the warrior Beowulf and his men as they cross the sea to Denmark at the request of King Hrothgar. The king's hall is being terrorized by Grendel, a giant troll killing the Danes. What Beowulf finds is not simply a monster: Grendel is a being of flesh and blood driven by vengeance for wrongs committed against his family, and Hrothgar appears to bear more responsibility for the killings than Beowulf was led to believe. The film was directed by Sturla Gunnarsson, its first entry in his feature career, from a screenplay by Andrew Rai Berzins. Gerard Butler plays Beowulf, while Stellan Skarsgård appears as Hrothgar and Ingvar E. Sigurðsson plays Grendel, with Spencer Wilding as Grendel's father and Gunnar Eyjólfsson as Aeschere.

The production was an international effort involving companies from Australia, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Canada and the United States. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.5/10 from 36 reviews, while on TMDB its rating is 5.6/10 from 267 votes, so critics and general viewers are closely aligned in their assessment.

Sturla Gunnarsson went on to direct Ice Soldiers in 2013. The film was released on September 14, 2005, and runs 103 minutes.
