Short description
The Omni Consumer Products corporation is moving ahead with its plan to tear down parts of Detroit and build a new development called Delta City. Residents of the affected neighborhoods refuse to leave, so OCP brings in a mercenary force to drive them out. An underground resistance forms, and RoboCop finds himself caught between the company that owns him and the people he was built to protect.
This third entry in the series was directed by Fred Dekker, following his earlier films Night of the Creeps and The Monster Squad. Frank Miller and Dekker wrote the screenplay, and Patrick Crowley produced it for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Orion Pictures. Robert John Burke takes over the title role, with Nancy Allen returning as Anne Lewis, alongside Rip Torn, John Castle, Jill Hennessy and CCH Pounder among a credited cast of 59 and crew of 114. The film runs 105 minutes.
Made for about 22 million dollars, RoboCop 3 took in roughly 11 million worldwide, a return well below its cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 4.9 out of 10 from about 1,500 votes, indicating a poor reception from viewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming took place in Atlanta, where preparations for the 1996 Olympic Games had already begun at the time. Most of the vacant buildings shown in the film were houses slated for demolition.
- At the 54th minute of the film, the ninja robot Otomo descends into a basement and is surrounded by three rebels. When Otomo kills two of them, a rolled-up map overlay appears behind the lapel of the last rebel's jacket.
- Peter Weller refused to play RoboCop again due to filming David Cronenberg's movie 'Naked Lunch' (1991).
- The film was shot in 1991, but was not released until November 5, 1993. The reason for the delay was the bankruptcy of Orion Pictures, the company responsible for the film's distribution.
