Dreamkeeper follows an elderly Lakota storyteller, known as Pete Chasing Horse, who wants his grandson Shane to carry the tribe's legends onward. Shane, a teenager with troubles of his own and a debt to dangerous people, agrees to drive his grandfather from a South Dakota reservation to a large powwow in New Mexico. Over the long journey, the old man recounts traditional tales from several nations, stories filled with spirits, talking animals and magic. The trip becomes a passage for Shane, who gradually opens up to the heritage he has mostly ignored.
Steve Barron directed the film, which came after Rat in his filmography, which includes Electric Dreams, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Coneheads and The Adventures of Pinocchio. John Fusco wrote the screenplay, and Ron McLeod and Matthew O'Connor produced it for Hallmark Entertainment. August Schellenberg plays Grandpa and Eddie Spears plays Shane, with Gary Farmer, John Trudell, Chaske Spencer and Teneil Whiskeyjack among the credited cast of 31. The production, made across Germany, Canada and the United States, had a budget of 40 million dollars and runs 174 minutes.
Dreamkeeper was released in 2003 and drew a comparatively large audience for a television film on IMDb, where it holds a rating of 7.5 from around 1,900 votes. On TMDB its rating sits at 6.7 from a much smaller number of votes.
