Short description
Presenting the tale of American founding father Alexander Hamilton, this filmed version of the original Broadway smash hit is the story of America then, told by America now.

What's left behind the scenes

  • A video version of the Broadway blockbuster.
  • In his 2016 book, "Hamilton: The Revolution," Lin-Manuel Miranda revealed that his friendship with Hugh Laurie (an English actor, director, singer, musician, comedian, and writer) inspired and motivated him to write Alexander Hamilton’s song, "You'll Be Back." This friendship began during the filming of the series "House" (2004-2012), when Laurie uttered these words during a drunken conversation.
  • Ron Chernow, the author of the Hamilton biography that so inspired Lin-Manuel Miranda, was initially skeptical of the idea of making a musical about Hamilton’s life (1755/1757-1804), but he changed his mind at his first meeting with Miranda, who asked for his help with the script. His skepticism vanished completely when Chernow heard the first Hamilton song.
  • Filming took place in June 2016 and lasted only three days. According to the director, so little time was needed because by that point the cast had been performing "Hamilton" on stage for a year.
  • Over 100 microphones were used in the filming of the ‘cinematic’ version of the live stage performance.
  • According to David Diggs, in portraying Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), he modeled himself after Prince (1958-2016).
  • The musical gained such popularity that the U.S. Treasury reconsidered its plans to replace the portrait of Alexander Hamilton on the ten-dollar bill with that of another statesman.
  • Before embarking on a film about Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda considered writing a musical about Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) and the Civil War (1861-1865) based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s 2013 book, “Team of Rivals.” He changed his mind when it became known that Steven Spielberg had begun filming the biographical film “Lincoln” (2012).
  • It took Lin-Manuel Miranda six years to write the musical.
  • Ryan Coogler and Rob Marshall expressed strong interest in directing a film adaptation of the musical, but Thomas Kail ultimately became the film’s director.
