Celia, a wealthy young woman, meets a charming stranger named Mark while on holiday in Mexico and marries him after a brief courtship. She moves into his New York home, where she finds his odd relatives and a wing of rooms built as replicas of famous murder scenes. One room stays locked, and what it holds is tied to her husband's fixation and to the fate of the wife who came before her.
Fritz Lang directed and produced this drama-mystery, working from a screenplay by Silvia Richards. It was the seventeenth of the twenty-four films he directed, arriving between Cloak and Dagger and House by the River. Joan Bennett plays Celia opposite Michael Redgrave as Mark, with Anne Revere, Barbara O'Neil, Natalie Schafer and Paul Cavanagh among a credited cast of forty-six. Universal Pictures handled production alongside Diana Productions and Melange Pictures, on a budget of two million dollars.
The film runs ninety-nine minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.6 from around six thousand three hundred votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 from roughly one hundred sixty-five votes. Both figures point to a modest, middling reception that has held steady over the decades.
