Grand Isle
Short description
Grand Isle is a drama-thriller set in a Louisiana coastal community. Buddy, a young father who does handyman work, comes to the Victorian home of Walter and Fancy Franklin to repair a fence. A hurricane forces him to shelter there overnight, and the couple's hospitality soon gives way to manipulation: Walter wants Buddy to kill his wife, while Fancy tries to draw the younger man toward her. Buddy does not realize he is being played by both of them. When Detective Jones later accuses him of murder, Buddy has to describe what happened during that night at the Franklins' house in order to clear himself, exposing the couple's secrets in the process. Nicolas Cage plays Walter, KaDee Strickland is Fancy, Luke Benward is Buddy, and Kelsey Grammer appears as Detective Jones; Zulay Henao and Emily Marie Palmer round out the cast.
Stephen S. Campanelli directed, following his debut Momentum with this second feature, from a screenplay by Rich Ronat and Iver William Jallah. The film was released in December 2019 and runs 97 minutes.
Reception has been modest. On IMDb the rating stands at 4.7 from more than five thousand votes, and on TMDB it sits at 5.4 from a few hundred votes, giving a small but consistent picture of viewer response. A critics' rating of 4.1 from eleven reviews places professional opinion somewhat below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The funds allocated for the film ran out, and filming had to be wrapped two days earlier than planned.
- According to director Steven S. Campanelli, some of the film's scenes were shot on an iPhone.
- Walter's lines, performed by Nicolas Cage, were largely improvised.
- The character played by KaDee Strickland brings a glass of tea to Walter by the fence. Walter drinks half and returns the glass. When the camera returns to her a few moments later, the glass in her hand is full again.
