Short description
Count Dracula is a horror film based on Bram Stoker's novel. Jonathan Harker, a London solicitor, travels to a castle in Transylvania to handle a property transaction with Count Dracula, and discovers that his host is a vampire. Harker ends up in the care of Van Helsing, a vampire hunter, while the count makes his way to London, where Harker's fiancée Mina and her friend Lucy become drawn into the danger.
Jesús Franco directed the film, the sixth of twenty-one titles he directed in the facts' chronological order, following The Girl from Rio and preceding Eugenie. Harry Alan Towers produced and co-wrote the screenplay with Franco and Augusto Finocchi. Christopher Lee plays Dracula, with Klaus Kinski as Renfield, Herbert Lom as Van Helsing, Maria Rohm as Mina, Soledad Miranda as Lucy and Fred Williams as Jonathan Harker. It is a co-production involving Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and Liechtenstein, and runs 98 minutes.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.6 from around 4,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.9 from roughly 128 votes. The two averages sit close together, suggesting a modest but consistent response from viewers across both platforms.
What's left behind the scenes
- Christopher Lee (1922-2015), who played Dracula, and Herbert Lom (1917-2012), who played Van Helsing, never met on set; they filmed all their scenes separately.
- It is said that Christopher Lee was already tired of playing Count Dracula, and he only agreed to appear in this film because he was promised a highly accurate adaptation of Bram Stoker's (1849-1912) novel (1897). Be that as it may, the adaptation contains significant deviations from the literary source material, although, according to director Jesus Franco (1930-2013), he and Lee remained friends for many years afterward.
