Antonio Carotenuto, a longtime carabiniere, returns to his hometown of Sorrento to take charge of the local police force. He finds that his family home is occupied by Sofia, a spirited fish seller who has no intention of moving out. While the paperwork is sorted out, Antonio lodges with the devout Donna Violante, and his brother Matteo, the town priest, keeps an eye on his behaviour. Antonio's interest in Sofia complicates the standoff over the house.
The film is a comedy directed by Dino Risi, the first of the fourteen features listed for him. Ettore Maria Margadonna wrote the screenplay, and Goffredo Lombardo produced it for Titanus. Vittorio De Sica plays Carotenuto, the role he had originated in earlier films of the series, with Sophia Loren as Sofia, Tina Pica as the servant Caramella, Lea Padovani as Donna Violante and Antonio Cifariello as Nicolino.
Released in December 1955, the film runs 106 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.5 out of 10 from around 2,700 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.8 from 183 votes, a modest but consistent reception across both audiences.
