The Guilty

The Guilty centres on Joe Baylor, a Los Angeles police officer reassigned to a 911 dispatch desk while awaiting a court hearing the next day. During a night shift, he takes a call from a woman who cannot speak openly and appears to have been abducted. Working only from his phone and the information he can gather, Baylor sends units after her and reaches out to her home, where he speaks with her young daughter. As he tries to piece the situation together, what he is dealing with turns out to be different from what he first assumed.

Antoine Fuqua directed the film, the fifteenth of the nineteen features he has made, following Infinite and preceding Emancipation. Nic Pizzolatto wrote the screenplay, and Jake Gyllenhaal, Fuqua and Michel Litvak produced. Gyllenhaal plays Baylor, heading a cast of twenty-six that includes Ethan Hawke, Riley Keough, Peter Sarsgaard and Paul Dano as voices heard on the other end of the line, with Christina Vidal appearing on screen.

The film runs eighty-nine minutes. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from around 174,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 3,300 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 6.4 out of 10 from 192 reviews. Audience and critics' scores sit close together, indicating a broadly similar response on both sides.
