Encanto
Short description
Encanto is an animated family fantasy set in a hidden town in the mountains of Colombia, where the Madrigal family lives in a magical house. Each child in the family has been granted a unique gift, ranging from superhuman strength to the power to heal. Mirabel is the exception: she received no gift at all. When the magic around their home comes under threat, she comes to believe that she, the only ordinary member of the household, may be the one who can save it.
The film was directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, and written by Bush with Charise Castro Smith. It is the fifth of the six features Howard has directed, following Bolt, Tangled, Tangled Ever After and Zootopia, and it precedes Zootopia 2; for Bush it is the first of two directing credits, ahead of the same 2025 sequel. Stephanie Beatriz voices Mirabel, with María Cecilia Botero, John Leguizamo, Mauro Castillo, Jessica Darrow and Angie Cepeda among the cast.
Released in 2021 by Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures, it runs 102 minutes and cost about 120 million dollars to make, going on to take roughly 261 million dollars worldwide. Audiences rate it 7.2 on IMDb from some 295,000 votes and 7.6 on TMDB from just over 10,000 votes, while critics gave it 7.5 from 210 reviews, placing the three measures closely together.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Stephanie Beatriz was considered for the role of Luisa. However, after the filmmakers met with her, it became clear that she was not at all what one might expect based on her role in the series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (2013-2021), and she was offered the role of Mirabel.
- The conversation between Abuela and Mirabel near the end of the film takes place in a multicolored river. Such a place actually exists in Colombia. It’s called the Caño Cristales River, and it is distinguished by its incredible beauty. Its mouth is located on the territory of a remote national park in the department of Meta. A special permit is required to visit it, so only a few people visit it each year.
- In 2018, directors Byron Howard and Jared Bush, as well as composer Lin-Manuel Miranda and other authors of the film, took a long trip to Colombia to immerse themselves in its culture. They met with artisans, cooks, and architects, and also visited the cities of Bogotá and Cartagena. The town of Barichara particularly impressed the visitors. A woman named Alejandra Espinosa Uribe, whom they hired as a guide, became the film's technical consultant. Mirabel's appearance (with curls and large glasses) was also based on Uribe.
- Initially, Stephanie Beatrice was considered for the role of Louise. When the filmmakers met with her, they offered her to voice Mirabel.
- Unlike most Disney films, the main character here doesn't have a comical sidekick.
- Stephanie Beatrice was nine months pregnant when she recorded the song "Waiting for a Miracle." On the day of recording, she noticed that she was going into labor, but didn't tell anyone. She successfully recorded the song, and gave birth the next day.
