Weathering with You

Weathering with You follows Hodaka Morishima, a high school student who leaves his remote island home for Tokyo. Struggling for money and unable to work legally, he finds shelter and a job with a small magazine devoted to the occult. Tokyo is in the grip of unusually persistent rain, and amid this gloom Hodaka meets Hina Amano, a girl living alone with her younger brother. Hina turns out to possess an extraordinary ability: through prayer she can clear the sky and hold back the rain. Hodaka sees a way to make use of her gift, and the two draw closer as the weather around them grows steadily stranger.

The film was directed and written by Makoto Shinkai, arriving three years after Your Name. and marking the eighth feature in the chronological list of his directed works, ahead of Suzume. Kotaro Daigo voices Hodaka and Nana Mori voices Hina, with supporting roles from Tsubasa Honda, Sakura Kiryu, Sei Hiraizumi and Chieko Baisho. It was produced by Genki Kawamura, Wakana Okamura and Kinue Ito for CoMix Wave Films alongside TOHO and KADOKAWA.

Made for about 11 million dollars, the film took roughly 194 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7.5/10 from around 69,000 votes, on TMDB 8/10 from a smaller base, while critics gave it 7.5/10 across 98 reviews, putting professional and audience assessments in close agreement.
