Short description

Lassiter is a 1984 crime thriller set in late-1930s London, where a charming jewel thief named Nick Lassiter is caught by the authorities. Rather than face a long prison sentence, he is pressured by British police and an American agent into a dangerous assignment: stealing a fortune in diamonds from the German embassy in London. The gems are intended to fund Nazi espionage operations, and the embassy is heavily guarded, leaving Lassiter with little room for error.

Directed by Roger Young, Lassiter was the first of the nine films listed in his directing filmography, followed by the television films Into Thin Air, Joseph, Moses, Solomon, Jesus, Saint Paul, Dracula and Augustus: The First Emperor. It stars Tom Selleck as Nick Lassiter, alongside Jane Seymour, Lauren Hutton, Bob Hoskins and Joe Regalbuto, with a credited cast of 47. The screenplay was written by David Taylor, and Albert S. Ruddy produced.

The film was released on February 17, 1984, and runs 100 minutes. Made on a budget of 20 million USD, it earned 18 million USD worldwide, falling short of its production cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 44 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Tom Selleck's character—the courteous gentleman thief Nick Lassiter—was modeled after Cary Grant's character, John Robie, from the film To Catch a Thief (1955).
  • Lauren Hutton played a sexy blonde named Kari von Fürsten, who killed her male victims during sex using a hairpin. This occurred eight years before Sharon Stone made a similar plot widely famous in the movie 'Basic Instinct' (1992).
  • Jane Seymour had previously appeared in a spy action movie when she played a Bond girl in Live and Let Die (1973).
  • One of the film's scenes is copied verbatim from the movie The Hustler (1973).
  • At the beginning of the film, a caption appears on screen: "London, June 1939." However, this year does not align with the time period in which the events of the film take place.
  • Bryan Coburn was dubbed by David de Keyser.
