Andrea Marcocci is a long-time train driver struggling with a fractured home life. His rigid patriarchal nature creates tension with his children, including a son who cannot find employment and a daughter facing marital and personal conflicts. This family instability coincides with a professional crisis after Andrea witnesses a man commit suicide by jumping in front of his train. The trauma leads to mistakes on the job and a medical discovery that he is bordering on alcoholism, resulting in a demotion and a pay cut.
Directed by Pietro Germi, this drama is the second film in a list of his works that includes Mademoiselle Gobete and Divorce Italian Style. Germi also wrote the screenplay alongside Alfredo Giannetti and Luciano Vincenzoni and starred as the lead character, Andrea Marcocci. The cast includes Luisa Della Noce, Sylva Koscina, Saro Urzì, Carlo Giuffrè, and Renato Speziali. The production was handled by Carlo Ponti through Ponti-De Laurentiis Cinematografica and ENIC.
The film has been well received by audiences, holding a rating of 7.6/10 on IMDb based on 1,600 votes and a 7.7/10 on TMDB from 72 votes.
