Two brothers live in a small hamlet near Mont Blanc in the French Alps. Zachary Teller, the elder, once worked as a mountain guide but withdrew from that life after accidents involving his clients, and now keeps sheep and tends the family chalet. Chris, his much younger brother, is frustrated by their poverty and sees no future in the village. When an airliner from India crashes on the mountain and rescuers cannot reach the site, Chris pressures Zachary into climbing with him to take the valuables carried by the dead passengers. Zachary goes along against his own judgment, and the expedition tests the bond between them.
Edward Dmytryk directed and produced the film, working from a screenplay by Ranald MacDougall. It was the eleventh of the eighteen features he directed in chronological order, coming between The Left Hand of God and Raintree County. Spencer Tracy plays Zachary, with Robert Wagner as Chris. Claire Trevor, William Demarest, Barbara Darrow and Richard Arlen appear in supporting roles.
The Paramount production was released in May 1956 and runs 105 minutes. Audience responses have been moderately positive: on IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from around 2,500 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.9 out of 10 from a much smaller number of ratings.
