Senna

Senna is a documentary about the Brazilian racing driver Ayrton Senna, following his Formula 1 career from his debut season in 1984 until his death at Imola in 1994. Assembled largely from archival footage, the film follows his rise from a gifted newcomer to a three-time world champion, and the fierce rivalry with Alain Prost that played out both on and off the track.

Asif Kapadia directed the film, his third feature after The Return and Far North, working from a screenplay by Manish Pandey. It was produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and James Gay-Rees, with Senna, Prost, Frank Williams, Ron Dennis, Viviane Senna and Milton da Silva among the credited participants. The film runs 106 minutes and was released in 2010.

The response was strong: it took about 8 million dollars worldwide, a substantial figure for a documentary. Audiences rate it highly, with 8.4 from roughly 84,000 votes on IMDb and 8.1 from about 1,200 votes on TMDB. Critics gave it 7.9 from 121 reviews, in line with the audience scores. Kapadia went on to make Amy, Diego Maradona and further documentaries.
