The Coldest Game

Warsaw, 1962, at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Joshua Mansky, an American former chess champion and troubled mathematical prodigy, is brought to Poland to take part in a high-profile match against the Soviet titleholder. The contest between the two superpowers serves as cover for something else entirely: Mansky is drawn into espionage, and as tensions between Washington and Moscow escalate, the game carries stakes that reach well beyond the board.

The film is a Polish production directed by Łukasz Kośmicki, who wrote the screenplay with Marcel Sawicki. It was Kośmicki's first feature as director, followed years later by It Takes a Village. Bill Pullman leads the cast as Mansky, with Lotte Verbeek and James Bloor as agents Stone and White, Robert Więckiewicz as Alfred, Aleksey Serebryakov as the Soviet player Gienadij Krutow, and Corey Johnson as Donald Novak. The film runs 104 minutes and blends drama with thriller elements, using the confrontation between two players to reflect the wider standoff of the period.
