Fear Street: 1978 takes place in the town of Shadyside during the summer of 1978, where the annual season at Camp Nightwing brings together young people from Shadyside and neighbouring Sunnyvale. Long-standing rivalry between the two groups divides campers and counsellors alike. When a killer begins targeting people at the camp, the summer turns into a struggle to survive, and the two sides are forced to work together to uncover a mystery tied to the town's violent history.
The film is directed by Leigh Janiak, who wrote the screenplay with Zak Olkewicz. It is the second entry in her Fear Street trilogy, following Fear Street: 1994 and preceding Fear Street: 1666 in the release order of her features. Sadie Sink plays Ziggy Berman and Emily Rudd plays her sister Cindy, with Ryan Simpkins as Alice, McCabe Slye as Tommy Slater and Gillian Jacobs as the adult Ziggy. Kiana Madeira also appears, linking the film to the wider series. Produced by Chernin Entertainment on a budget of about 10 million dollars, it runs 111 minutes.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.7 from roughly 90,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.2 from a much smaller base of about 2,300 votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 from 109 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting broadly comparable reactions across viewers and reviewers.
