The Powerpuff Girls Movie serves as an origin story for Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, three small girls created in a laboratory by Professor Utonium. An experiment involving sugar, spice, assorted nice things and the mysterious Chemical X produces the trio, who emerge with flight, superhuman strength and laser vision. The accident that gives them their powers also wrecks Townsville, and the townspeople come to regard the girls as a danger rather than a protection. Seeking a way to make amends, they turn to Mojo Jojo, a mutant monkey with ambitions of his own: assembling an army of primates and seizing control of the world. The film adapts the animated television series of the same name.
Craig McCracken directed, and wrote the screenplay with Paul Rudish and Lauren Faust. Donna Castricone produced. The voice cast includes Cathy Cavadini as Blossom, Tara Strong as Bubbles, Elizabeth Daily as Buttercup, Roger L. Jackson as Mojo Jojo, Tom Kane as Professor Utonium and Tom Kenny in several roles. Made for about 11 million dollars, it returned roughly 16 million worldwide.
This was the first feature McCracken directed, followed chronologically by Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends: Destination Imagination in 2008. On IMDb it holds a 6.5 rating from around 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.8 from a much smaller base of some 362 votes.
