Short description

Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler follows a criminal mastermind operating in Weimar-era Berlin. Mabuse leads a criminal organization whose schemes include stealing information for profit on the stock exchange. He uses disguises and hypnotic powers to move undetected through high society, manipulating a young millionaire named Edgar Hull into a card game where Hull loses a fortune. Prosecutor von Wenk takes up the investigation, resisting Mabuse's mental influence as he tries to expose the man behind the crimes. The film was released as two parts and runs 271 minutes.

Fritz Lang directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Thea von Harbou and Norbert Jacques. It is the second of the 24 films Lang directed in chronological order, following Harakiri and preceding Die Nibelungen: Siegfried. Erich Pommer produced it for Uco-Film GmbH in Germany. Rudolf Klein-Rogge plays Mabuse, with Aud Egede-Nissen as Cara Carozza, Gertrude Welcker as Countess Dusy Told, Alfred Abel as Count Told, Bernhard Goetzke as Prosecutor von Wenk and Paul Richter as Edgar Hull, among 35 credited cast members.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.8 from around 9,900 votes, and on TMDB 7.7 from 214 votes. A critics' rating of 8.3 from 17 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
