Countdown is a horror thriller about a young nurse named Quinn Harris who installs a phone app that claims to predict the exact moment a person will die. While her friends are shown decades of remaining life, Quinn's screen gives her only three days, and the countdown begins immediately. She soon learns that other users have died at their appointed times, that the app cannot be removed, and that a menacing figure appears to be following her. Determined to escape her predicted fate, she teams with Matt Monroe, another user whose clock is also running down, to uncover what the app really is.
The film was directed and written by Justin Dec, working from a premise that turns a familiar piece of technology into a source of dread. Elizabeth Lail leads the cast as Quinn, with Jordan Calloway as Matt, Talitha Bateman as Quinn's sister Jordan, Peter Facinelli as Dr. Sullivan, Dillon Lane as Evan and Matt Letscher as Charlie. It was produced by Sean Anders, John Morris and John Rickard for Universal Pictures, STX Films and Wrigley Pictures, and runs 90 minutes.
Made for about 7 million dollars, Countdown returned roughly 48 million worldwide, a strong multiple for a modestly budgeted genre release. Reception split along familiar lines: on IMDb it holds 5.4/10 from around 53,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2/10 from about 2,371 votes, suggesting viewers were more forgiving than the 4.2/10 average from 72 critics' reviews.
