A young boy named Toru Aizawa lives in a quiet seaside town with his father, who runs a restaurant. Toru finds a mysterious egg and takes it home, and a small turtle hatches from it. The creature grows at an unusual rate and shows abilities that suggest it is a new form of Gamera, the giant turtle monster. Meanwhile, a sea beast called Zedus approaches the Japanese coast, leaving destruction in its wake. Toru and the people around him try to protect the growing turtle as it becomes the only force capable of confronting Zedus.
Gamera the Brave was directed by Ryuta Tasaki and written by Yukari Tatsui, with Yoichi Arishige and Hirohisa Mukuju producing. It is the fourth film Tasaki directed, arriving between Kamen Rider Agito: Project G4 and Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider W & Decade: Movie War 2010, and it reflects his background in Japanese tokusatsu television and film. The cast includes Ryo Tomioka as Toru, Kaho, Kanji Tsuda, Susumu Terajima, Kaoru Okunuki and Megumi Kobayashi. Released in Japan in April 2006, the film runs 96 minutes and is a family-oriented entry in the long-running Gamera series, with a worldwide box office of about 4 million dollars.
Audience responses differ somewhat: on IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from roughly 1,700 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7 out of 10 from about 85 votes. Both suggest a modest but favorable reception, with the smaller TMDB sample being more positive.
