Spontaneous

Mara Carlyle is a high school senior whose ordinary life is upended when a classmate suddenly and inexplicably explodes. Before long, other students at her school meet the same fate, with no explanation for what is happening. As the body count rises, Mara and her classmate Dylan try to navigate everyday teenage concerns while never knowing whether the next moment will be their last. A romance develops between them, and the two find themselves living in the present because the future can no longer be taken for granted.

Brian Duffield wrote and directed the film, his first time in the director's chair, and he also produced it alongside Nicki Cortese and Matt Kaplan. Katherine Langford plays Mara and Charlie Plummer plays Dylan, with supporting turns from Yvonne Orji, Hayley Law, Piper Perabo and Rob Huebel. Based on a novel by Aaron Starmer, it mixes comedy with horror and runs 102 minutes.

Spontaneous was released in October 2020. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.5 from roughly 19,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.7 from about 604 votes. Those audience scores sit below the critics' rating of 8.2 from 68 reviews. Duffield went on to direct No One Will Save You in 2023 and Whalefall in 2026.
