To Catch a Killer

To Catch a Killer centres on Eleanor Falco, a Baltimore police officer whose troubled past and erratic personal life mask a sharp instinct for how violent offenders think. On New Year's Eve a lone gunman opens fire from a high vantage point in the city, killing a large number of people and leaving investigators with almost nothing to work from. Geoffrey Lammark, the FBI's lead investigator on the case, brings Falco onto his task force because she appears able to read the killer's thinking in ways more experienced colleagues cannot. As the manhunt widens and public and political pressure builds, friction inside the team grows, and Falco has to confront her own history to keep the investigation moving.

The film is directed by Damián Szifron, who wrote the screenplay with Jonathan Wakeham. It is his second feature as director, following Wild Tales in 2014. Shailene Woodley, who also produced, plays Falco opposite Ben Mendelsohn as Lammark; Jovan Adepo, Ralph Ineson, Richard Zeman and Dusan Dukic are among the credited cast of 71.

Released in April 2023, the film runs 119 minutes and is a Canadian-American production from RainMaker Films and FilmNation Entertainment. It drew limited commercial attention, taking about 3 million dollars worldwide. Audiences have been more favourable than critics: on IMDb and TMDB it sits at 6.8 out of 10 from roughly 1,380 votes on TMDB, while the critics' rating stands at 5.7 out of 10 from 81 reviews.
