- This is the first film by director and screenwriter James Gray that he shot entirely digitally. Gray usually prefers to work with 35mm film. According to Gray, he and cinematographer Darius Khondji would have happily worked with film this time as well, but “certain circumstances” intervened. This most likely refers to the coronavirus pandemic, which forced filming to be suspended, or a limited budget. Either way, Khondji had authentic lenses from the 1970s on hand, which were used during filming.
