Short description

Armageddon Time is a drama set in Queens, New York, in the early 1980s, centred on Paul Graff, a boy from a Jewish family who dreams of becoming an artist. He strikes up a friendship with Johnny Davis, a Black classmate who is treated as an outsider, and the two spend their time together getting into trouble. After an incident, Paul's parents move him to a private school with an elite student body, where he encounters attitudes very different from those of his old neighbourhood. His grandfather, with whom he is close, offers him a perspective on prejudice drawn from his own past. The film follows Paul as he weighs the expectations placed on him against his loyalty to his friend.

James Gray directed and wrote the screenplay, and produced the film with Marc Butan and Anthony Katagas. It is the eighth feature he directed and follows Ad Astra. Banks Repeta plays Paul, with Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong as his parents, Jaylin Webb as Johnny, Anthony Hopkins as his grandfather and Ryan Sell as his brother. Around 41 cast members and 82 crew members are credited.

The film was released in October 2022 and runs 114 minutes. Made for a budget of about 15 million US dollars, it took roughly 7 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from about 18,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from over 500 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 230 reviews is slightly above those audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • This is the first film by director and screenwriter James Gray that he shot entirely digitally. Gray usually prefers to work with 35mm film. According to Gray, he and cinematographer Darius Khondji would have happily worked with film this time as well, but “certain circumstances” intervened. This most likely refers to the coronavirus pandemic, which forced filming to be suspended, or a limited budget. Either way, Khondji had authentic lenses from the 1970s on hand, which were used during filming.
