Superman: Red Son is an animated adaptation of the DC Elseworlds story in which the rocket carrying Krypton's last son lands not in Kansas but in the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Raised there, he becomes a symbol of Soviet power and the communist cause, which alarms the United States and turns the nuclear arms race into a contest over superhuman abilities. On the American side, the scientist Lex Luthor works on a plan to counter the Soviet threat, while CIA agent James Olsen is drawn into the effort against Superman. The parallel world also brings in Wonder Woman, who sides with Superman, and Batman, who stands with the American bloc.
Sam Liu directed the film, the twentieth of the twenty-two features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between The Death and Return of Superman and Batman: Soul of the Dragon. J. M. DeMatteis wrote the screenplay, and Liu produced with Amy McKenna for Warner Bros. Animation, DC Entertainment and DC Comics. The voice cast includes Jason Isaacs as Superman, Amy Acker as Lois Lane, Diedrich Bader as Lex Luthor, Vanessa Marshall as Wonder Woman, Phil Morris as James Olsen and Paul Williams as Brainiac. The film runs eighty-four minutes.
On IMDb, voters rate it 6.4 out of 10 from about nineteen thousand votes, while on TMDB it holds 7.1 out of 10 from a smaller base of roughly nine hundred votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 out of 10 from eighteen reviews places it above both audience scores.
