Strategic Air Command follows Robert "Dutch" Holland, an Air Force reservist and veteran pilot whose baseball career is interrupted when he is recalled to active duty. Assigned to the Strategic Air Command during the Cold War, he helps bring new long-range bombers into service while his wife, Sally, adjusts to the demands of military life and his long absences. The tension between his sporting career and his obligation to the service drives the story.
Anthony Mann directed the film, the fourteenth of the twenty features listed in his filmography, arriving between The Man from Laramie and The Tin Star. James Stewart leads the cast as Holland, with June Allyson as Sally, Frank Lovejoy as Ennis Hawkes, Barry Sullivan, Alex Nicol and Bruce Bennett in supporting roles. Valentine Davies and Beirne Lay Jr. wrote the screenplay, and Samuel J. Briskin produced it for Paramount.
Released in March 1955, the film runs 112 minutes and mixes action, drama and war. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from roughly 4,400 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 6.1 from a much smaller pool of about 49 votes, so the two audiences are broadly similar in their assessment.
