Short description
Don't Worry Darling is set in the 1950s in Victory, an isolated company town in the California desert built around the top-secret Victory Project. Alice and her husband Jack are among the residents whose needs are met by the company, with the men working at the project's headquarters while their wives enjoy a life of leisure and parties. The community's leader, Frank, asks only for loyalty and discretion in return. As Alice begins to notice cracks in the seemingly perfect life around her, she starts to question what the men are actually doing and why, and what the company is hiding behind its polished surface. Katie Silberman wrote the screenplay.
Olivia Wilde directed the film, her second feature after Booksmart (2019) and before The Invite (2026). Florence Pugh plays Alice, with Harry Styles as Jack, Chris Pine as Frank, and Wilde herself as Bunny. The cast also includes KiKi Layne and Gemma Chan, among 41 credited performers.
Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema and Vertigo Entertainment, the film had a budget of 35 million USD and grossed 88 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.3 rating from 175,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.8 from 3,087 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.4 from 359 reviews places it below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film shows Frank, the head of the top-secret “Victory Project,” living in the so-called “Kaufman House,” which has been used in a wide variety of television and film projects over the years (it was built in 1946) – particularly for exterior shots. This film shows the “Kaufman House” from the inside.
- Olivia Wilde initially wanted to cast Harry Styles in the lead male role, but he was on a world tour. When the tour was interrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic, and LaBeouf was fired, Styles agreed to join the project.
- Initially, Olivia Wilde considered playing the lead role herself, but after seeing Florence Pugh in “Midsommar,” she decided to give the role to her.
- Dakota Johnson, who left the film's cast due to filming commitments for the drama “The Lost Daughter,” was replaced by Kiki Layne.
