Vic and Melinda Van Allen are a wealthy New Orleans couple whose marriage has soured into resentment and mistrust. To hold the union together and avoid divorce, they agree that Melinda may take lovers as long as she does not leave the family. The arrangement turns into a cruel psychological contest between them, and when Melinda's lovers begin to vanish and one is found dead, suspicion falls on Vic. The film is based on a novel by Patricia Highsmith.
Adrian Lyne directed, working from a screenplay by Zach Helm and Sam Levinson. It was his ninth feature, arriving two decades after Unfaithful, and it returns to the marital jealousy and erotic tension that marked much of his earlier filmography. Ben Affleck plays Vic opposite Ana de Armas as Melinda, with Tracy Letts, Lil Rel Howery, Dash Mihok and Finn Wittrock in supporting roles. The production cost about 49 million dollars. On IMDb, the film holds 5.5 out of 10 from roughly 71,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 5.8 out of 10 from over 1,700 votes. A critics' rating of 4.9 out of 10 across 233 reviews places it below both audience scores.
